Understanding. Compassion. Coexistence.

This platform helps citizens in Kosovo better understand street dogs and their behavior – so that fear turns into knowledge and compassion.

How to act around street dogs

Practical tips for peaceful coexistence
Street dogs are part of many communities in Kosovo. Most are harmless and avoid people – but misunderstandings can lead to fear, tension, or even accidents.
This guide helps you understand how to behave respectfully and safely when you encounter a street dog.

Guide

Stay Calm and Confident

Dogs react strongly to body language. Sudden movements, shouting, or running away may trigger fear or defensive behavior

Walk slowly
Avoid direct eye contact
Speak softly if needed

Don’t Touch Unknown Dogs

Even friendly dogs can become unpredictable if they feel threatened or overwhelmed.
Feeding can lead to competition and confusion.
Let dogs approach you – and never force interaction.

Teach Children to Respect Distance

Children often want to pet or play with street dogs. Teach them to admire from a distance, stay calm, and ask an adult if it’s safe to get closer.

Recognize Body Language

Learn to read the signs:
Relaxed dog: open mouth, wagging tail, loose posture

Scared dog: tail tucked, ears back, body low

Warning signs: growling, stiff legs, fixed stare → give space!

Don’t Chase, Shout at, or Throw Things at Dogs

It may scare them away, but it also increases fear and aggression – and worsens the problem long-term.

Choose kindness over control

Report Dogs in Need

If you see an injured, sick, or aggressive dog, contact a local vet or a nearby animal welfare group.
We’ve compiled a helpful list of contact points for different regions in Kosovo – you’ll find it on this page.

Feeding Dogs

Feeding street dogs can be a kind and helpful act – but it should be done carefully to avoid problems.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

Feed at the same time and place, if possible – this helps dogs feel safe and reduces conflict

Put food down, then step back – don’t try to hand-feed

Avoid feeding near schools, playgrounds, or crowded areas

Feed in small amounts and clean up leftovers to avoid attracting other animals

🚫 Do not feed dogs in groups

Feeding dogs in groups can cause fights or draw unwanted attention.

With thoughtful feeding, you help dogs without putting yourself or others at risk.
